NBA Execs Shed Light On Harrison Barnes’ Weaknesses

Apr 18, 2011 2:55 PM

Harrison Barnes would have been a top-5 pick if had chosen to enter the draft, even though he needs improving.

"He's going to have to develop some other aspects of his game," said a Central Division general manager. "He's a pure shooter right now. He came on as the season progressed. He doesn't do enough things to wow you. I haven't seen it. Even when he scored those 40 points (against Clemson in the ACC tournament), I was like, 'He's doing it effortlessly from the perimeter but he's not doing much else.' "

Said a Western Conference scout: "As a shooter, his percentage is pretty mediocre. He doesn't beat people off the dribble at all. But he can play. I do think his shootng will get a lot better."

Another GM said Barnes may play some power forward in the pros, the same way Boston's Jeff Green does as a "stretch four" for Boston. "He's not athletic or mobile to be chasing guys off of screens. I think he'll end up playing four."

Barnes To Stay At North Carolina For Sophomore Season

Apr 18, 2011 9:15 AM

Harrison Barnes will remain at North Carolina for his sophomore season and not declare for the 2011 NBA Draft.

"As an 18-year old, I'm in the early stages of my life journey," Barnes said. "I'm honored and blessed for the chance to play in the NBA. And because of my family, teachers, passion, and work, I have the ultimate dream of one day playing and experiencing a fulfilling career in the NBA.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision. But I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina. I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports.

"The experiences I've enjoyed on and off the court will be invaluable. These experiences will help fuel my journey in the NBA and beyond.

"I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but my decision on November 13, 2009, still holds true. I'm focused on being a student-athlete. And my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina.

"As a team, we're preparing for a special season. My off-season plans are to diligently work on honing my basketball skills in all areas with one team-goal in mind -- to bring the 2012 national championship home to UNC."

McAdoo, Davis Take MVP Honors At Jordan Brand Classic

Apr 17, 2011 4:18 AM

James McAdoo scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the East to a 113-109 victory in the 10th Jordan Brand Classic. While McAdoo won MVP honors for the East, Anthony Davis had 29 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to become the West MVP.

McAdoo will attend North Carolina in the fall and Davis will play for Kentucky.

"He influenced the game so much. And with me being a Tar Heel, whenever I get in an argument with someone, I just pull out the Michael Jordan card," McAdoo said.

Michael Gilchrist and Marquis Teague scored 12 and 14 points respectively and also will be joining Davis at Kentucky.

Tar Heels Sign Desmond Hubert

Apr 15, 2011 10:23 AM

Desmond Hubert, one of the top big men remaining in the country, picked North Carolina over Maryland.

Hubert was one of the top big men left on board.

“When I decided what school I wanted to be at, I took basketball out of the picture and said, where would I feel more comfortable at as a regular student?” Hubert told CBSSports.com. “I was more comfortable with the campus, students and the high quality of an education I can receive at UNC.”

Hubert is a 6-foot-9 center from New Egypt (N.J.) who ran with the Playaz on the AAU circuit. He is a long and athletic big man who runs the floor effectively and blocks shots at a high rate on the defensive end.

He will help provide depth behind John Henson and Tyler Zeller down low in Chapel Hill.

Cavs See Derrick Williams As NBA Power Forward

Apr 10, 2011 2:21 PM

The player ranked No. 2 on most draft boards is Arizona’s Derrick Williams.

Most NBA teams, including the Cavaliers, view the 6-foot-8, 241-pound Williams as more of a power forward than a small forward at the next level. Teams question whether he’s quick enough to guard small forwards.

This poses somewhat of a problem for the Cavaliers, who have a logjam in the frontcourt with power forwards Anderson Varejao, J.J. Hickson, Antawn Jamison and Samardo Samuels already on the roster.

The Cavs are said to be high on North Carolina small forward Harrison Barnes, but the 6-8, 210-pounder is reportedly leaning towards a return to Chapel Hill.

Henson, Zeller Returning To Tar Heels; Barnes Undecided

Apr 6, 2011 6:46 PM

Forwards John Henson and Tyler Zeller have decided to stay at North Carolina, the school announced Wednesday.

"John and Tyler certainly considered their options, but in the end it came down to how much they enjoyed not only college basketball, but being part of the collegiate experience both on and off the court," coach Roy Williams said in a prepared statement.

"I spoke to about 10 NBA teams on their behalf and gave them that information, but their individual decisions are less about the NBA and more about what they wanted to do right now and the experiences they are enjoying at the University of North Carolina.”

Freshman Harrison Barnes is still weighing whether to enter the draft.

"Harrison is not as far along in his decision-making process as were Tyler and John,” Williams said. “I am still gathering information on him from NBA teams and hope to provide him with all of that information by the end of next week."

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is April 24.

Barnes, Henson Close To Decisions On Draft

Apr 5, 2011 10:32 AM

North Carolina freshman guard Harrison Barnes is nearing a decision about whether to enter the NBA draft.

Barnes is weighing his options, as is teammate John Henson.

“It’s something for them to watch and still see there’s basketball and that we aren’t going anywhere,” Henson said, then paused. “I mean, that we’re not going anywhere right now.”

Henson, a projected lottery pick in the 2011NBA Draft, said he’ll have a decision on his plans for next year by Saturday. Teammate Harrison Barnes, who is all but guaranteed a top-five pick in the draft, will have fans wait just a few days longer.

“It’ll probably be in at least a week, week and a half or so,” Barnes said.

The deadline for early entry into the draft is April 24.

Domed Arena May Have Contributed To Poor Shooting Title Game

Apr 5, 2011 10:17 AM

There might be something to the theory that teams shoot worse when playing in football-style domes.

Butler shot just 18.8 percent while Connecticut knocked down 34.5 percent of its shots.

Since 2003, only four national championship game participants -- Syracuse, North Carolina, Kansas, and Duke -- have shot better in the title game than they did on the season.

All nine games were played in football stadiums.
